Accessible Websites for Hotels: Inclusive, Accessible, and Well-Designed

Hands using a smartphone to search through hotel reservations on a laptop keyboard.

Accessibility is no longer just a "nice-to-have"—it’s an expression of genuine hospitality. We’ll help you make your website accessible, identify digital barriers, and implement concrete improvements—without compromising on web design.

Can't have both accessibility and beauty? Sure you can.

Since June 28, 2025, the Accessibility Enhancement Act has imposed new requirements on certain digital offerings, such as websites. This raises many questions for hoteliers: Does the requirement for an accessible website also apply to my hotel? Which sections must be accessible? What about the booking engine and other external tools? And can all of this be implemented without affecting my hotel website suddenly look like a government website from the ’90s?

This is exactly where time is often lacking in the day-to-day operations of a hotel to work through technical requirements and legal guidelines. We’ll help you identify the relevant barriers and determine concrete next steps for your website.

Our Approach

Digital hospitality starts with an accessible website

Whether it’s a new hotel website or an existing one, we always keep digital accessibility in mind. This includes, among other things, clear structures, sufficient contrast, good readability, intuitive usability, and support for assistive technologies such as screen readers. We don’t view accessibility in isolation. The design, user experience, and brand identity should still reflect your hotel’s identity—while being accessible to as many people as possible.

Working Together to Achieve the Best Results

What an Accessible Website Needs

An accessible website is the result of the interplay between technology, design, and content. To ensure we achieve the best possible results, we’ll need your help with a few things.

Corporate Design & Contrasts

Accessible design is also based on your existing corporate designguidelines. If certain brand colors do not meet the required contrast standards, we’ll show you suitable alternatives. We’ll work with you to determine which adjustments to implement.

Your Content & Documents

Content also plays a key role in accessibility. This includes, for example, descriptive alternative text for images, clear link text, and captions or transcripts for audio and video content. When creating and formatting this content, we clearly define which tasks are our responsibility and which are yours.

Testing a Website for Accessibility: The XPORT Accessibility Check

Would you like to know how your website is currently performing? With our accessibility test for your website, we’ll check key areas of your site for potential barriers and show you where specific action is needed. The test costs €490 and includes the following steps:

Step 1

Current Situation Analysis:

We review key pages and features of your website for common barriers that do not yet meet the requirements of WCAG and BITV, and document any issues we find.

Step 2

Documentation:

You will receive clear documentation of the barriers and issues identified—organized in a logical manner and prioritized by relevance.

Step 3

Recommendations for Action:

We'll show you exactly which adjustments make sense and where you should start when implementing them.

Step 4

Accessibility Statement:

Based on our review, we will prepare a draft of an accessibility statement for you to publish on your website.

Important Note: This assessment and the preparation of the statement are based on our best knowledge and our agency’s experience. However, they expressly do not constitute legal advice. Legal responsibility for the publication, completeness, and compliance always rests with the client.

Frequently Asked Questions About Accessible Hotel Websites

  • Is an accessible website really mandatory for my hotel?

As of June 28, 2025, the Accessibility Enhancement Act has introduced new requirements for certain digital offerings and services. Whether and to what extent your hotel or website is subject to these requirements depends on the specific circumstances and any applicable exemptions. We can assist you with technical and design reviews, but we do not provide legal advice.

  • Will my booking engine (IBE) and external PDFs also be automatically accessible?

We need to make a distinction here: We have only limited control over external tools such as your IBE. We do not guarantee the performance of third-party providers, but we will transparently include any identified defects in the accessibility statement. PDF documents on your website (e.g., old menus) are also excluded from our services by default and should ideally be replaced by accessible HTML content or commissioned separately.
  • Does the design of my hotel website compromise accessibility?

No. Accessibility and good design are not mutually exclusive. Sufficient contrast, clear structures, easy-to-read text, and intuitive controls improve the user experience for many guests—not just for people with disabilities.
